Jackie Xuereb again stole the hearts of the Maltese contingent yesterday (as she had done in Gozo and Malta two years ago) when she won Malta's first gold medal on the sixth edition of the Games.
She won her category-52kg-after beating all her three rivals, Marta Pla of Andorra, Carina Buechel of Liechtenstein and Sara Yanotti of San Marino.
It was a merited win for Jackie who thus retained the title she had won in Gozo and confirming that that result was no fluke. But it was not Jackie who made Malta proud yesterday. All her team mates - even Victoria Licari who just missed a bronze medal - deserve praise for a wonderful performance which will long be remembered.
Giggja Gunnarsdottir beat Victoria Licari in the final moments of their bout. The first Maltese medal winner was Silvano Cristauro who defeated Marios Gnaftis of Cyprus for the bronze in the mes's 78kg category.
That was followed up by a silver medal for Laurie Pace in the women's 61kg category. She lost to Blum of Liechtenstein for the gold.
In the men's 71kg category, Jason Trevisan lost his final to Eirikur Christinsson of Icaland and thus had be content with the silver medal.
Philip Camilleri won a bronze, although in an unexpected manner. His fight with Jerome Viroulaud of Monaco ended in a draw, but the judges opted for Camilleri when they came to determine the winner.
