19970610_All round improvement

There was an all round improvement at these Games with the first ever gold medal in the athletics and table-tennis fields.
Judo, however, again provided the best satisfactions with all the judokas earning a medal each - three golds, three silvers and two bronzes. Jackie Xuereb (a hat-trick), Kamilla Peter and John Zammit won the gold medals. Never in the history of these games had the national anthem been played and the Maltese red and white flag hoisted three time in one afternoon. It was certainly a great occasion.

Judo also provided Malta with three silvers. Laurie Pace and Jason Trevisan faced the unusual opponents while Philip Camilleri maintained hid promise with a silver medal win after a bronze two years ago.
Judokas Silvano Cristauro and the young Alexia Mallia obtained two further medals (bronze) while Mario Aquilina did well to win the bronze in the Laser event, even though this provided another disappointment for the Maltese group - it came at the expense of another Maltese competitor. Henry Tabone - after they finished tied in third place.
