19981229_Preparations in full swing for GSSE next May

The Malta Judo Federation and Associate Disciplines recently organised the last competitions for 1998. These were the Air Malta Christmas Judo Championships. These championships serve to give the judokas an opportunity to measure their preparation before the short Christmas break.
The Parliamentary Secretary Jesmond Mugliett and the chairman of Air Malta Louis Grech were present for these championships. The federation was supported by Air Malta Peugeot during these championships.
Next month, the national team will be starting to peak up to final preparations for the most important sporting event for Malta - the Games of the Small States of Europe, in Lienchtenstein next May.
The federation will start with an intensive physical training programme in preparation for the national championships in February.
Also in February, the national team will take part in the Paris Open, where more than 600 athletes from all over the world normally participate. The team will also stay for a one week training stage with these athletes.
In March, the federation will be inviting more than 60 selected athletes to compete in the 15th Maltacom International Open. Most of these athletes will also stay for a training stage with the national team.
Two weeks later the national team leaves Malta again to take part in the 'Citta Di Roma' international competition and training stage at the CONI/FILPJK International Training Centre in Rome.
April will be dedicated to the finetuning of competition techniques in Malta, possibly with the participation an international triangular tournament organised by the Malta Olympic Committee Sicily, Tunisia and Malta will be taking part.
The final stage of preparation will be at the International Centre in Ostia, Rome where the national team selected for the Liechtenstein Games will undergo the final preparation together with the Italian national selection.
This preparation programme will be very expensive and the federation is hoping to raise enough funds through sponsorships to maintain previous trends of flying the Maltese flag on the highest places in judo competition.
    Jujitsu demo
After the change which took place during the last annual general meeting, the federation organised a demonstration of Jujitsu under the leadership of John Sevasta, technical director of the federation for Jujitsu and competition for Kendo. These two disciplines have been integrated within the federation.
Next month Sevasta will be participating in the world seminar of the international Jujitsu federation due to be organised in Italy. The Kendo Association will be inviting a Japanese Master to prepare the Kendokas  for the first National Championships which will be held in conjunction with the Judo National Championships in February.
