20000517_More competitons

To give judokas more competitive experience, the Judo Federation introduced two extra competitions to its calendar. The weight categories were revised into lightweights, middleweights, heavy and super heavy, as this would give more opportunity for competition, since more entries could be registered.
This was also a very important competition to allow judokas a possibility to accumulate points for national gradings. In judo to move from one belt to another it is necessary to have competition experience besides the technical know-how. The competition was held at the Hibernians Budokwai Judo Club.
Some top athletes could not participate, as they were busy traveling overseas to participate in the Millennium Tournament organised in Northern Ireland - Belfast.
Manuel Cassar, bronze medallist in the Games of the Small States of Europe '93, had a great comeback in the super heavy weight +100kg although he weighed in 97kg.
His lightning shoulder throw eliminated all opposition in a few seconds. Manuel Cassar over the past four years had dedicated his attention to Japanese fencing - kendo. This was a great comeback and the judo community was very happy for his return.
The next ranking competition will be held in June
