Malta National Judo Championships 2015

The Malta Judo Federation hosted its 43rd edition of the National Championships at the Bocci Drome in the Cottonera Sport Complex. The day started with Sensei Joe Castillo, Gaetano Scerri, Joseph Muscat, John Curmi and 60 young dragons on the mat. Our young Judoka brought the Bocci Drome to life as they demonstrated their skills in Judo through games and friendly contests. Envic Galea, President of the Malta Judo Federation said in his opening speech that all our young Judoka are winners, as Judo is not only a sport, but a way of life. All the dragons were awarded a gold medal to commemorate this event.

The first Judoka to go on the mat were the Espoirs – Judoka aged 12 to 14 years. This age category has special rules, such as no sacrifice techniques, strangles and armlocks, as it is considered as a transitional category between the non competitive and the competitive age categories. The winners of the Espoir categories were Massimo Micallef, Cameron Gray, Sean Spiteri, Adin Vella, Clive Camilleri, Thomas Zerafa, Gabriel Camilleri, and Ena Camilleri.

In the Cadet, Junior and Senior categories, the spectators and coaches present witnessed some extremely interesting contests and beautiful Ippon. The winners in the Cadet categories were Kurt Camilleri (Tigne Judo Club), Andreas Castillo (Shirojudokwai Judo Club), Joseph Muscat and Kurt Butters (Kamikwai Judo Club), Alice Battistino and Martha Spiteri (Hibernians Budokwai Judo Club). Some of the cadets also contested the Junior and Senior categories. The winners of the Junior Categories were Joseph Muscat (Kamikwai Judo Club), Cormack Spiteri (Tigne Judo Club), Alessio Muscat (Kinsu Judo Club), and Esther Spiteri (Hibernians Budokwai Judo Club).

The main titles contested on the day were those of the Senior Categories.  Jeremy Saywell, Marcon Bezzina and Isaac Bezzina (Malta Judo Academy) reconfirmed their titles as they eliminated their opponents easily. Murman Korchilava was uncontested. In these championships, we also saw the return of Joanna Camilleri (Hibernians Budokwai Judo Club) who won her title back in the -57kgs. One of the Judo prodigies, Alice Battistino, showed off her superiority as she was crowned National Champion in the -52kgs, beating the veteran Vanessa Frazier in the final. Vanessa decided to contest the National Championships after she resumed her training in a club in Italy despite her extremely busy schedule as Ambassador of Malta in Italy. In her own words, “Judo is a sport which you can continue practising all your life.” The other winners were Gencheva Redka (Hibernians Budokwai Judo Club) and George Atanasov (Malta Judo Academy). Cormack Spiteri, even if he did not make it to the top of the senior podium, gave an extremely good performance throwing his opponents with spectacular Ippon.

Without the help of the referees John Zammit, Abdul Rahman Lativ, Lloyd Caruana, Ray Spiteri; the table officials Mario Giuliano, Louisa Galea, Alexis Milne; the Medical team made up of Ivan Esposito and the St John’s Ambulance; and the several other volunteers, this event would not have been possible.
